We remember when David was in charge of the international students outreach at St Barnabas Church, in Cambridge .                           It is now called Friends International and we believe it was the same then.  David & Judith had gone to look at it after his retirement. They stayed for at least ten year.s It became known as the Barn and is still running from Christ Church in Newmarket Rd.

On a major anniversary of David & Judith's stewardship of The Barn, a surprise party was arranged for him.  We seem to remember that it was the tenth anniversary, but we may be wrong there.  Judith told David that he was going for dinner. We are not sure if this was supposed to be with friends or at a restaurant. Anyway, we had a time arranged and the team at the Barn were sitting on the stage at St Barnabas church hall in the dark awaiting David's arrival. 

Judith had told him that they had to call into the hall to collect something on the way to their dinner date. How she arranged for him to enter the hall and not herself  while David waited in the car, we do not know. Perhaps it was because David had the keys. Anyway, David duly opened the door onto the darkened hall. When he switched on the light, we were all siting there and started to sing Happy Birthday. It was a bit of a shock for David, but a pleasant one.

We only discovered years later that David was also the boss of Sarah's brother in law at the HMRC tax office in Cambridge.
